Periodontal Regeneration

Periodontal Bone Graft (Regeneration)

Periodontal surgery may be indicated to arrest disease progression and to regenerate lost bone and soft tissue. Several surgical techniques have been developed to regenerate periodontal tissues including guided tissue regeneration (GTR), bone grafting (BG) and the use of enamel matrix derivative (EMD).

There are several different types of bone grafting material that can be used for periodontal regeneration. This includes the use of human bone, cow bone or synthetic material.

EMD is an extract of enamel matrix and contains a protein derived from porcine teeth called amelogenins. This material can be used to enhance bone formation, root coverage and increases the speed of healing.

Your doctor will let you know what materials are appropriate for you.
